New Assisted Living Legislation: Learn More at the February Briefing

Written by Argentum | February 16, 2023 at 5:49 PM

Lawmakers are preparing to reintroduce legislation this week that would expand access to assisted living for veterans. The legislation renews the Expanding Veterans’ Options for Long Term Care Act, introduced in the last session of Congress by Senators Jon Tester (D-MT), Jerry Moran (R-KS), and Patty Murray (D-WA), to establish a pilot program for eligible veterans to receive assisted living care paid for by the Veterans Administration (VA).

The anticipated legislation is updated from S. 4169 introduced in the last session of Congress. It was spurred by a 2020 VA report to Congress on the critical need for increasing veterans access to different long-term care settings. Specifically, the VA found that veteran placement in a SNF is $120,701 annually, compared to only $51,600 in an assisted living community. The study states that the VA would save $69,101 per assisted living placement per year. Argentum strongly supports this legislation and is working with other industry stakeholders to advocate for its passage.

This month's Argentum Advocates monthly briefing will provide an update on this legislation including changes from the last version and a forthcoming companion bill in the House. The briefing will also share updates on our broader legislative priorities, which are focused on workforce development and improving access and affordability of assisted living. We will also share the latest regulatory developments, including proposed rules on transparency and non-compete agreements, and the status of the OSHA health care worker rule.

Register now for next Wednesday's policy briefing. Argentum Advocates are invited to these exclusive sessions to hear directly from Argentum’s federal lobbyists on our current federal and state public policy efforts.
