House Legislation Seeks to Include Assisted Living Option for Veterans

Written by Argentum | August 30, 2022 at 6:10 PM

Argentum is proud to support legislation recently introduced in the House of Representatives that would allow veterans to have the option of living in assisted living communities via a series of pilot programs around the country.

Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) introduced The Expanding Veterans’ Options for Long Term Care Act, along with cosponsors Reps. Bryan Steil (R-Wis.), David Trone (D-Md.), and Stephanie Bice (R-Okla.).

The legislation would create a pilot program to allow veterans access to cost-effective assisted living care, similar to companion legislation introduced earlier this summer in the Senate.

Argentum signed a letter of support to Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee Chairman Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Ranking Member Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), and U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.), all of whom sponsored the Senate version, S. 4169.

Argentum members operate communities that include independent living, assisted living, memory care, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs), which are home to 2 million vulnerable seniors, of which 42% are veterans or their spouses. The Expanding Veterans’ Options for Long Term Care Act is common sense legislation and an important start to helping veterans access cost-effective assisted living care.

Argentum is part of a coalition with the National Center for Assisted Living, American Seniors Housing Association, and LeadingAge that are all working in conjunction to promote the bill.
